The last thing you might have a bun in the oven to regain in a wholly dark cave in China is aunicorn . But for researchers , that is exactly what happened . The raw coinage belong to to the genusSinocyclocheilusand has a rather strange visual aspect – but , of course , the classic unicorn saddle horn .
In southern China , 32 specimens were collected from a cave during a cavefish diversity survey . It turns out that 15 of these specimens represented a totally novel species . The new mintage was carefully compared to known species within the same genus using morphologic comparisons and phyletic analysis and wasgiven the nameSinocyclocheilus longicornussp . nov . , from the Romance words " longus " , meaning long , and " cornu " , meaning French horn .
This new discovery make for the number of species in that genus to 77 , 13 of which are found in the same province – Guizhou – as the new species , and all of which are detect in China .

The new species has an unforked horn - like social structure on its forehead and small eyes that are degenerated , have in mind it ca n’t see well . However , since it lives in full wickedness , it does n’t need them . Some species in the same genus miss the trumpet - like social organization and these are found to endure in more well - lit waters , lead researchers to believe that the French horn could be pertain to the fresh species ’ dark lifestyle .
Cavefish often have unusual morphological characteristics . In Mexico , cavefishare exuviate light on human fleshiness by being especially rotund . Meanwhile , in Thailand , they have learnt towalk and climb .
The cavefish is between 10.5 to 14.6 centimeters long ( 4.1 to 5.7 inches ) and has a lack of pigmentation in it ’s scales , fall in it a ghostly milky appearance . The puddle in which it was found measures only 1.8 meter all-inclusive ( 5.9 feet ) and less than a measure deep ( 2.6 feet ) . The squad find out that the unexampled species was not closely related to other long tusk species in the same genus and suggest that comparing the environmental conditions to these other species may reveal what the trumpet is used for .
The study is put out inZooKeys .
