So a U.S. Senator get the Dollhouse to reverse Echo ( Eliza Dushku ) into a unsighted spiritual drumbeater … whose eye are bend into actual cameras , in one of the series ’ more science fictional premises so far . This think that Echo does not wear halter tops , tubing tops , miniskirts , thigh - high charge or babydoll dresses – so it ’s a big change for the serial justly there . ( Based on the previous episodes , I was sure the scary religious furor was go to have an all - miniskirt uniform for female member . )

And then in the “ B ” plot of ground , as showcased above , Victor ( Enver Gjokaj ) has been getting inappropriate erections during his mindwiped “ doll ” state . At first , I remember , “ Oh , it ’s ripped from the headlines – of the early 1990s . ” But then I found myself liking its Big Love - esque brainsick compound people more than I ask . For one thing , it took the obvious observation – hey , these cultus people are brainwashed , and so is Echo ! – and got it out of the way in the first five minutes . And then never referred to it again . ( A less writer would have built up to that observation over the whole course of the episode , and then unveiled it with a cock-a-hoop “ Ta - da ” at the closing . ) For another , the fad fellow member had just enough personality not to feel like total sheep , especially the one woman who maintain say matter like , “ This is just like Zion Ranch ! ” and actually dispute Jonas the crazy cult loss leader from time to metre . Also , the plot moved fast enough that I did n’t feel too bogged down in the “ are these cult people really bad or not ” question , with the ATF broker moving in by the episode ’s midpoint .

Oh , and the vista where the Mandrillus leucophaeus is descending towards Echo ’s eye , while her animal trainer Boyd talks about her science at “ getting in ” to topographic point , was really fucked up and awesome .

And then you had the “ miracle ” where Echo ’s sight gets restored , which is a overnice twist to drop in . It has all sort of theological resonances , include the whole Saul of Tarsus thing the episode mentions early on . And it leads to a playfulness argument about the “ meaning ” of Echo ’s miracle – does it mean they should all light themselves on fire and require another miracle to redeem them ? Or does it intend , as Echo say , that she contract her heap back so she could conduce them out of there . Any sequence which leads up to someone state , “ God add me here . He has a message for you . And that message is , ‘ Move your ass ! ' ” I so whole need that embroidered and frame on my wall .

It did n’t hurt that last night ’s episode , “ straight Believer , ” was compose by Tim Minear , source of many of the best Angel and Firefly episodes . As for the stuff about Agent Ballard , I would gayly view Tahmoh Penikett play Scrabble for an hour , even if it was n’t written by Tim Minear , and he definitely had a few cute present moment . And he ’s making progress , even if it ’s only because Alpha is spoonful - feeding him . And soon , Ballard and Echo meet !
