The later installing in the Harry Potter enfranchisement is the most visually lush of the series , capturing the luminous sweetheart of magical school Hogworts before malevolent destroys it . But is this immorality scream Voldemort or puberty ?
Fans have been eagerly anticipating Harry Potter And The Half - Blood Prince partially because it signals the blooming of two romances that many masses have been expect for . Harry ’s pals , brainiac Hermione and goofy Ron Weasley , eventually originate to see out that they like each other as more than friends . And Harry himself eventually realizes that he needs a sensible , sporty lady friend like Ron ’s piffling sister Ginny . These developments are dead on target to the smell of the book , and would make a welcome time out from the usual ghostbustering if they were at all believable .
Unfortunately , none of these young actor have any interpersonal chemistry together except as a Scooby Gang . And so even though I think this is believably the salutary Harry Potter film so far , there are stint of the film that experience mechanical . Harry , Ron , and Hermione ham actor it up to show how besotted they are with various people , and the effect feel like a amatory clowning without the romance . We never understand why Hermione is interested in Ron , other than the fact of proximity . Indeed , Ron ’s family relationship with the lusty Lavender seems far more believable .

But these romantic shenanigans are weave into what makes this film so beautiful . Director David Yates notoriously play very severely to make the film take care dreamy , and in fact tinkering with the visuals delay the picture show ’s discharge by almost a year . manifestly , an early rendering of the film contained such hyper - impregnate people of color that the studio sent it back to Yates and asked him to lighten up it up . The movie still retains a unique aspect , in which landscapes and buildings seem to glow . The dingy characters who take midway stage pop against this radiant desktop , which work on because their stories are the most interesting in this plastic film .
That true heart of this moving picture is the relationship between Harry and his scourge Draco , who has been show into the evil rank of the Deatheaters . With his family in disgrace , Draco is no longer the taunting , mean male child of old film . His face pale and run along , he is pursued by an immorality he can not accept frightens him . We know he has been task with a alarm errand for the Dark Lord , and that the slippery Professor Snape has blaspheme to protect him . As Draco puts it , he has been choose – and his word of honor measuredly echo the phrase that people use to depict Harry Potter , “ the chosen one . ”
The Deatheaters have grow so bold that they come blotch into muggle London like smokey , disgraceful bomb , destroy a bridge filled with pedestrians . It ’s an intense scene , giving us the feeling right away that this is n’t fairy tale spookery any longer . We ’ve crossed over into the humanity of grownup terror , where everyone – even non - wizards – has something to reverence . And as we see the always - mysterious Snape ( played brightly by Alan Rickman ) being draw deeper into the Deatheater ’s plans , he becomes an even more challenging character reference . If anything frustrates in this movie more than the lacklustre romances , it ’s that we see less of Snape than we want to .

Part of the film ’s languor also fare from its MacGuffin , the bottled computer storage Harry watches in the retentiveness - play penseive . Good Professor Dumbledore tell Harry that he must watch memory of Voldemort ’s early days as Tom Riddle , and retrieve a missing memory , so as to defeat the evil wizard . So Harry must face the moody past times , while Draco must find the strength to take out his saturnine chore . Along the way , we see that Draco has been cornered into immorality . And that Harry has the content to do evil himself . The flick ’s claim comes from a potions book Harry becomes ghost with , a book filled with non-white spells that once belonged to someone called the half - bloodline prince .
And all of this fall out between quidditch matches and cumbersome appointment . The dialog is even peppered with quips that work amazingly well in this mostly serious franchise .

Yates directs the pic like a suspense story with no payoff – unless the payoff you ’re looking for is a closeup of Harry kissing Ginny Weasley with his slightly repugnant extendo - sass . Other than the previous Harry ceramist film , Yates is well known for direct episodes of suspense television show , and you ’ll wish that he bring some of the taut tempo from those shows into this moving picture . Even when Harry is going undercover to retrieve that lost memory , or braving a lake full of skeleton , the feeling strike strangely flat .
The termination may be scandalous , but it does n’t feel climactic . part this is because the next two movies – rule book seven will be broken up into two films – will give us the true climax of the chronicle start here . But partly , I think that this is just bad storytelling . We have a series of set pieces , not a smooth , dramatic arc . Many of those set composition are quite glorious , however . And we ’re willing to forgive a little piece of clumsiness in the service of a story which wield to sense entirely magical .
