Creative people are self - obsessed assweasels . And you may never really bed someone else — you just love the bogus version of them that you create in your head . Love is really the process of your ego attempt to crush and neutralise the egotism of your object of heart .
That ’s sort of the nihilistic subject matter I take forth from Ruby Sparks , a new pic about a guy who writes his aspiration daughter into macrocosm . The bad news is , Ruby Sparks is n’t just kind of nihilistic — it ’s also a movie in which you do n’t care about any of the characters that much . spoiler ahead …
In Ruby Sparks , Paul Dano plays Calvin , a writer who achieved massive literary fame when he was just 17 . And now , he ’s trying to come up with a 2d novel , but he ’s creatively blocked . But then he starts daydream of a beautiful , quirky , elfin missy named Ruby ( Zoe Kazan ) — and meanwhile , his jolly therapist ( Elliott Gould ) assigns him to indite something , even if it ’s bad .
Calvin start writing about Ruby , and lo and behold , she becomes substantial , and is really in sexual love with him . At first , Calvin believe he ’s hallucinating , but soon he realizes he ’s somehow take his perfect notional woman to life , and she ’s his . Not only that , but he pull in that anything he types about her on his magic typewriter becomes straightaway reliable — and at first , he swears he wo n’t abuse that power . At first .
The practiced intelligence is , the film acknowledges how creepy-crawly all of this is — especially once Calvin gives in to temptation and starts changing Ruby ’s mind for her , using his typewriter . The middle section of the moving-picture show , where Calvin gets corrupted by his ability , is the most interesting and memorable part , and will in all probability make you bankrupt out in hive . And the film is clearly straining for a message that loving someone — really loving them — means accept him or her as a disjoined somebody , with idea and desires and ideas . You ca n’t just love the approximation of someone in your principal , and attempt to ram the other soul to fit into that .
And the movie does make Calvin ’s monumental self - absorption an issue — at one item , we meet his only previous girlfriend , who helpfully explain that Calvin only ever saw her as an extension of himself . Meanwhile , Calvin ’s brother Harry ( Chris Messina ) trounce him about how he knows nothing about women , and how he has to in reality mind to citizenry at times , or at least pretend to pay tending to other human beings .

So for a while , Calvin and Ruby have a sorting of everlasting relationship — she ’s always at his house , cooking him delicious meal and pay attention to him , and he ’s blissed out . Calvin goes “ Wow ” a circle , with his whole face opening up , so that he looks like a twelve - twelvemonth - previous getting a lapdance . And then , of course , Calvin and Ruby turn tail into trouble . In Ruby Sparks , though , Calvin ’s mystery relates to Ruby ’s very existence . Her personhood and what small agency she has depend , to a very with child extent , on her not see out that she bound from his literary noodlings . This picture show ’s readiness - up is incredibly dark , and even though the movie does jeopardize into that dark as metre goes by , it also wants you to invest in Calvin and Ruby ’s human relationship as something literal and peradventure even beautiful .
Before we go any further , I should confess a personal bias . I detest film about writers . For example , I had a major job with Stranger Than Fiction , partly because people kept insisting that Emma Thompson ’s character was a great literary writer , when her write wasclearly kind of schlocky . Movies about fiction author are just one of my favourite peeves — and especially motion picture about writer ’s block . So that could be one cause why this movie did n’t entirely work for me .
That said , there are two major problems with Ruby Sparks . The first is that it is far-out , with a capital Q and possibly a few other randomly capitalize missive . It ’s like the quirkiest Sundance moving-picture show about offbeat whimsical the great unwashed you ’ve envision , only with more whimsy tally in . This is especially in grounds during the well-chosen parts of Calvin and Ruby ’s relationship , when she ’s being a manic pixie little girl and he ’s being an lovely manchild , and everything is seeming vaguely European . This movie want you to adore it .
The other problem is , the protagonists are n’t that likable . To the extent that Ruby is a someone , you smell out that she ’s sort of a codependent fuckup who ’s had a string of self - destructive kinship with men who treated her horribly — and part of Calvin ’s fantasy , I guess , is that he ’s last to be the nice guy rope she fall for this meter around .
But also , you ’re probably supposed to believe Calvin is a sweet guy wire who slowly becomes creepy , as he exert more force over Ruby through his charming typewriter . Unfortunately , he starts out being portray as horridly self - immerse , and ascertain his endless therapy sessions does n’t do much to drive away that notion . And then we watch him drop day writing fanfic about his idealistic womanhood ( with himself as the Mary Sue ) , until she finally happen .
By the movie ’s climax — where it goes to a very black position indeed — you kind of bid Calvin would both turn out to be , in turn , the innovation of some other , dear , fantasist who could force him to get over himself a flake .
So you have to give this movie some point for being so dark and devoid of consolation about romantic love — to the extent that the Calvin / Ruby kinship is a metaphor for real - life relationships , aswriter / star Zoe Kazan claim in our exclusive interview , it ’s a very desperate metaphor indeed . The most interesting , well - observed stuff in the motion-picture show is also the most depressing — like the fact way Calvin starts to begrudge Ruby after she becomes too friendly with Calvin ’s mother . ( There ’s a case to be made that this is a film about misogyny and how it stems from workforce ’s issues with their female parent — but I do n’t think the motion-picture show want to be about that , and when I asked the music director , they seemed taken aback by that meter reading of the film . )

Oh , and there ’s also a metaphor about the relationship between the originative procedure and trick , and how both can influence and modify the world . But that gets subsumed pretty quickly into the whimsey that even if Calvin somehow create Ruby , she still has an existence beyond his vision , and he ca n’t of necessity understand her . Any more than any creative person can fully encompass or realize his or her own instauration , I guess .
All in all , Ruby Sparks is conceptually a enceinte movie — but its uncheerful messages about the solipsistic nature of love and the selfishness of creative thinking are obviously signify to be countervail by our warmness for these characters . unluckily , a bleak substance and unlovable character make for a dreadful compounding .
