Dune‘s Denis Villeneuve Breaks Down His Big Plans for the Sequel and Beyond

io9 ’s tagline is “ We come from the future ” and today we ’re relieve oneself well on that proclamation . We descend from a future in which you ’ve just seenDenis Villeneuve’snew version of Dune and as the acknowledgment roll , your first opinion is “ When is part two amount ? ” ( Do n’t interest , no spoilers here . )

Since its origination , the music director of Arrival andBlade Runner 2049conceived his adaptation of Frank Herbert ’s landmark sci - fi novel as a two - part saga . This first flick , which open up October 22 , even begins with the deed of conveyance “ Dune : Part One ” to let you have intercourse this is only the beginning . So , when io9 sit around down with other journalists to discuss all thing Atreides , Arrakis , and more with the director , we had to involve the question everyone will be thinking after watching the picture show : “ Just how quickly can we get part two in our eyeballs ? ”

“ I would say that I would be fairly ready to go quite quickly now , ” Villeneuve said , before clarifying further . “ Quickly in [ terms of ] a motion-picture show of that size of it . You still need to make exercise set and costumes , we are talking about months . ” Villeneuve explained that he could n’t split Herbert ’s account in two without a strong sensory faculty of where the continuation would go , so much of the intemperate lifting in terms of story is already done . “ When you make a movie in two parts … when you do the first part , you have to sleep together what you ’re give out to do in the 2nd part , ” he said . “ It has been mostly designed in a way that there ’s a peck of elements that are [ ready] … But if there ’s enthusiasm and the movie is greenlit , preferably than afterwards I will say that I will be quick to shoot 2022 for sure … I am ready to go and I would say that I would love to convey it to the concealment as soon as possible . ”

For Villeneuve though , there ’s no real rush — celluloid lives forever so he plans on taking his time with the continuation , assuming he gets to make it . “ We make love the first film I really had time to make indisputable that it wasexactly the way I require it to be , ” he said . “ And I would love to have the same feeling when I make the 2nd part . So that would be the precedency . Quality will be the priority . ”

With Dune still several weeks away from release , we wo n’t spoil exactly where or how the first film end . But it ’s not surprising to say the first film is very heavy on introducing the world of Paul Atreides ( Timothée Chalamet ) , including planets like Arrakis , villains like the Harkonnen , and the most valuable substance in the galaxy , spice . “ The sturdy project here was to introduce … the interview , to this world , ” Villeneuve said . “ To the code , to the cultures , the different families , the different planets . Now , once this is done , it becomes an insane resort area . So it will allow me to go berserk and really create . ” He explained that , though he did n’t want to downplay this movie , he imagines Dune Part One as an starter and Part Two as themain class . “ As much Dune Part One was by far my most exciting labor ever Dune Part Two is already receive me more even more excited , ” he say .

Oh , and desire to get more excited ? While the theatre director swear he ’s focused only on releasing Dune Part One and , hopefully , catch Dune Part Two made , he would sleep together to follow that up with Herbert ’s continuation , Dune Messiah . “ I ’m go to be very reliable . I picture the adaption of two Christian Bible , Dune and Dune Messiah , ” Villeneuve said . “ I said okay , as a filmmaker [ and ] as a screenwriter I know how to do this . So we settle to split up the first novel in two so now we are up to three movies . Those movies are very long to make . So for my genial sanity , I decide to just dream about three movies . After that , because I ’m a braggart devotee of all the novel , after that I ’ll see where I am . ”

“ By the elbow room , I ’m not dreaming about Dune Messiah flop now , ” he clarify , “ I ’m focusing on launching Dune Part One , hop there will be a part two , and that ’s my master mission . And that ’s enough . I mean , doing the first one was by far the most ambitious affair I ’ve ever done . And I think that we were capable to bring it to life because me and the squad just did that for two years and a one-half full time . Twenty - four time of day a day , seven days a week we were dream about Dune Part One . ”

Which bring us back to that first interrogation . If Dune Part One is a hit and Dune Part Two is quickly greenlit , Villeneuve suppose he ’ll be ready to photograph in 2022 . And while the first film take two and a half years of round-the-clock oeuvre , this “ berserk ” continuation already has some of that legwork completed . It seems plausible Paul Atreides could , potentially , be back in theaters by 2024,if all goes to plan . gratefully , Dune Part One is so obtusely packed with greatness , that should be just enough time to digest it all .
