OnInstagramThursday, the 29-year-old singer posted a photo with seven friends, all clad in black, and described the get-together as a sendoff ceremony for their “pop” sound.

“A funeral for my pop music,” Lovato, who was seated in the center and flashed the middle finger, said of the snap.

On their Instagram Story, the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer posted footage of the group laughing and chatting together behind the scenes, before the camera cut to music producer Oakestra at work in the studio.

Though the Grammy nominee hasn’t revealed when they might release new music, they’ve recently switched up their look. In December, the artist shaved their head into a chic buzzcut, adding aspider tattooand an industrial ear piercing in the new year.

In April 2021, Lovato dropped theirseventh studio albumDancing with the Devil… the Art of Starting Over— their first record in four years – which had an edgy pop sound.

The album accompanied the four-part documentary series,Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil, which saw Lovato share the story of theirnear-fatal 2018 drug overdosefor the first time and give fans a glimpse into their recovery.

As the trailer debuted for docuseries, the singertold PEOPLE during the Television Critics Association panelthat they"wouldn’t change a thing" about what happened after her drug overdose.

“Everything had to happen in order for me to learn the lessons that I learned,” Lovato said at the time. “It was a painful journey, and I look back and sometimes I get sad when I think of the pain that I had to endure to overcome what I have, but I don’t regret anything.”
