The future of the city may be the country . At least , that ’s what a group of future - minded architects and metropolis designers now conceive . To make city sustainable and carbon inert , we will have to design buildings to be more like ecosystem or living organisms .
The BBC has a great article this week on these succeeding living cities , and they boast several incredible designs from a New Yorkecological design group called Terreform . Above you may see one of their ideas for a living metropolis , with tower full of alga that can be used for fuel . These gorgeous , energy - generate building would be part of the eco - city ’s public resources . The metropolis would , basically , provide its own power .
And here ’s another concept from Terreform , for a house that count like something out of Nicholas Roeg ’s crazy 1970s alien movie The Man Who fall to Earth ( yes , the movie with David Bowie as an extraterrestrial — you should watch it ! ) . According to BBC Future :
Terreform ’s concept for a protection is built from a range of material – including lab - produce pig skin cell . The skin is immix with gums and plastics .
The thought of using research lab - grown tissues in computer architecture is another cornerstone of the living urban center idea . Materials for building these cities will belike come out of synthetical biological science lab . The hope here is that we can utilize a combination of biology and engineering to make buildings that can vivify or bring around themselves in a disaster situation — making the city both safe and less vulnerable to hold out and teardrop . Nothing could be more sustainable than a city that is a well - balance ecosystem , in a world where technology is no longer at odds with the surroundings .
