When I was in 2d grade I made a panorama of a city of the future . This was the early nineties and the diorama was supposed to make up the year 2000 — somehow still lightyears away for a young kid during the George H. W. Bush presidency . My little diorama metropolis had cars that ran on a magnetic track , some magniloquent awkwardly - influence buildings , and a style of reuse rainwater that supposedly ( at least in my juvenile mind ) was keen for the environment .
tike of the 20th 100 ( present blogger excluded , perhaps ) had some absorbing visions for the time to come . They tended to be somewhat optimistic , but each coevals betrays its own concern for the existence of tomorrow . In the sixties , kids imagined fly cars and jetpacks , mollify by fears around the Cold War . In the 1970s , kids expect their future to be filled with golem maids and vacations to Mars , but they alsoworried about violence , the price of gas and skyrocketing unemployment .
In thisfilm from 1983we hear from American kids about their imaginativeness for cities of the future . The kid have constructed and draw city that include peoplemovers run by computer , underground shops and even buck - drawn transportation . The remnant of this magazine testify a kid who warns that humankind will be destroyed if we do n’t find an alternative to gasoline soon — a fear that made a lot of sense to children of the 1970s and 1980s , but maybe less so to children of the 1960s or 1990s .
