There ’s been an explosion in the number of colorized photos lately . the great unwashed find honest-to-goodness smuggled - and - white photograph online , and meticulously add colour to give us a new position on story . But latterly one colorized figure of speech caught my eye after it was tweet by the notoriouslyinaccurateHistoryInPics . It ’s a stunningly colorful scene of theGolden Gate Bridge in 1940 . But the pic is a prevarication .
HistoryInPics scratch up the image from Reddit userkibblenbits . But HistoryInPics never mentions that the pic has beencolorized , nor who colorized it . The legend simply reads , “ Golden Gate Bridge , 1940 ” leading us to conceive that it ’s an “ unquestionable ” exposure from 1940 .
Here ’s where thing get eldritch . The picture is n’t even from 1940 , even though the Associated Press list the original black - and - white photo as having been charter on November 20th of that year . judge by the makes and mannikin of the gondola in the double , it ’s way off . As first pick out by commenters atThe Atlantic , the photo is more late by at least a decade .
I ask Jalopnik ’s ownJason Torchinsky , and he mean that the pic must be from 1952 or later , given that the maroon elevator car ( or , at least the one that ’s maroon in the colorized photograph ) expect most like a 1952 Chevy Bel Air .

Why does any of this subject ? Putting aside the Associated Press ’s erroneousness in date the picture for a moment , I think ( and so far , I ’m in the minority on this one ) that there ’s a risk that the colorized photos could become more popular in search engine results than the ignominious - and - white ones .
Take the persona above , for case . The top image is a photo by Norman Seeff dating back to around 1985 . The photo was recently colorized byJordan J. Lloyd .
“ WTF . I did n’t even substantiate I was on /r / ColorizedHistory . altogether undetectable food colouring , ” one commentersaysabout Lloyd ’s colorization of Jobs .
Color range resonate with those of us who grow up during a period when colouring material photography was the average — and color was obviously timeworn in 1985 ! But Seeff , the original photographer , made the conscious choice to sprout this special portrait in black - and - white . And what happens if this colorized version becomes more popular than the black - and - bloodless version ? Should we worry ? Does it matter at all to story ?
“ My only concern would be that nobody should see vividness versions as ‘ better ’ than black and whitened pilot in any fashion , ” Alan Taylor at The Atlantic secernate me . “ They may seem more relatable , or tickle some part of the brain that rub to fill in the gaps left by monochrome images , but they are definitely alterations — not originals . ”

The colorized photo aboveoriginallycomes from the Library of Congress and depicts ballet dancers in 1924 . ButPaul Edwards , the person who did the colorization , does n’t really know the original color of what those women are wear down .
There ’s nothing newfangled about photo colorization . Manual colorization is almost as old as photography itself . But here in the former 21st century there does appear to be a desire to color in all the old photo , now that the digital peter that make it easy are so commonplace .
As we ’ve learned time and again , the internet is like that old shaver ’ secret plan of Telephone . And a particular image or fact can start with one person online and of necessity become more ill-shapen as it gets further down the line . erroneous belief are insert — sometimes intentionally , sometimes by accident — until it meander up altogether distort our understanding of the original message .
The immense legal age of exposure colorizers believably do n’t have deception as a finish . But it seems crucial to have this discussion now . Especially since some of the large popularizers of account online ( I ’m look at you,@HistoryInPics ) have aterrible track recordwhen it come to provide context for these old images . It ’s one thing to remember our history . It ’s another to remember it wrong .
