Heche died in August 2022 after shecrashed her car into a Los Angeles home. The death wasruled an accident, withsmoke inhalationand “sternal fracture due to blunt trauma” listed as the causes.

“Today we lost a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul, a loving mother, and a loyal friend,” a rep for the star told PEOPLE in a statement at the time. “Anne will be deeply missed but she lives on through her beautiful sons, her iconic body of work, and her passionate advocacy.”

Nearly six months after his mother’s death, Heche’s sonAtlas Heche Tupperpublicly paid tribute to her in honor of the release date of Heche’s memoir,Call Me Anne, calling her “the brightest person I’ve ever known.”

“She always knew how to solve a problem, or help a friend,” he said in a statement shared with the Los Angeles Inquisitor at the time. “She always knew the right thing to do. I cannot put into words how grateful I am or how much I miss her.”

The statement continued: “Her bravery for always standing in her truth, spreading her message of love and acceptance, will continue to have a lasting impact.”

Atlas' fatherJames Tupper— who dated Heche from 2007 to 2018 — also shared his memories of the late star at the time.

“Anne and I were together for more than a decade, we have a beautiful son together and in that time, she was the very definition of light in our lives, always bringing fun, love and energy,” he shared. “She will always be remembered in our hearts and minds.”

The duo’s tributes came following Heche’s older son,Homer Laffoon— whom Heche shared with ex-husbandColeman Laffoon— thanked the public for their “support” in January.
