How do you demo why masses should make up attention to flood infrastructure ? Show them what a flood would really look like .
The Netherlands has the most modern urine direction substructure in the world , hands down . But that does n’t mean it ’s secure : The country has spend billions repairing and strengthening its systems as sea levels rise , and it ’s only storm up its attempt to amend one C of dyke , dike , and flood groove around the low - lie down area .
That ’s why the water board for the rivers Rhine and IJssel in Westervoort ask for the artistDaan Roosegaardeto make an installation to evoke awareness of water issues . “ The Netherlands is largely artificially extracted from the piss , ” the plank writes , describing the country as “ one corking employment of artistry . ” The stop of Roosegaarde ’s installation is to let people “ experience how deeply we live under water . ”

The installation , call Waterlight , is fairly simple . It ’s installed along the main flood channel , which is gloomy , grass - traverse ditch that ’s make as a back - up organisation should a dike fail . The channel give the alluvion pee somewhere to go — giving nearby towns worthful time to prepare for the inundation . Roosegaarde ’s team installed a series of LEDs that project watery lines along the edges of the channel , mimicking the water bloodline ofan utmost inundation in 1995 .
The idea is to let people in the community walk through the distribution channel and experience just how high the water gets if the flood infrastructure fail . “ In Waterlight people experience what the Netherlands would look like without their dykes , ” pronounce the chairman of the piddle board in a statement .
keen if it get up awareness , but it ’s also just uncannily beautiful ( and also a little clubby , no ? ) . The whole thing ends on March 1 , so go check it out now if you ’re nearby .
