The highly decorated sword with swastikas that archaeologists found at a necropolis in France.

Althoughswastikasare infamously bind to the Nazi regime and the atrocities of World War II , these ancient swastikas had unlike connotations . Swastikas were widely used in Mediterranean contexts , but these decorative theme were appropriated by theCeltsin mainland Europe for their own use at the oddment of the 5th century and part of the 4th century B.C.,Vincent Georges , an archeologist associated with INRAP and director of the necropolis digging , told Live Science in an email . However , he is unsure of the swastika ’s significance to the Celts .

Georges and his colleagues originally establish the steel and other sober good in 2022 at Creuzier - le - Neuf , a townspeople that now has apopulation of just 1,500 . But during theSecond Iron Age(450 to 52 B.C. ) , Creuzier - le - Neuf was at the crossroad of territorial occupation by the sinewy Celtic Arverni , Aedui and Bituriges kindred . TheINRAP team excavateda roughly 7,000 - square - foot ( 650 square meters ) burial area there that house over 100 graves . But due to the region ’s highly acidic soil , no skeletal remains were found . A single cremation burial was describe alongside a funerary vase with punch designs and paint band .

Nearly half of the tombs had metallic element ornaments , including jewellery . Cu - alloy bracelets were the most common artifacts found in the inhumation , but the team also establish 18 damaged brooch , let in one beautify with a polished gem . The gem is put in a disc adorned with gilt silver andrepoussé designs , or design pattern made by hammering the reverse side of the metallic sheet . It was create sometime between the former quaternary and early third centuries B.C.

Two rare swords

The most striking item found at the necropolis were the two well - conserve swords . An X - ray analysis of the short steel whose scabbard had the swastikas revealed embedded symbols at the blade ’s top — a rophy and a crescent lunation part by a melody , suggesting it was created at the first of the fourth century B.C.

The sun and crescent moon " undoubtedly reflectcosmological symbolisation " and were a " very widespread hallowed construct tie in to this particular kind of brand " at the clip , Georges said . He noted that similar symbolism was find on other Gaelic swords , as well as swords from the Etruscans , who lived in what is now Italy . He added that Dominicus and moon pattern can also be find on short swords throughout continental Europe from the third and quaternary century B.C.

The second sword was tenacious and its scabbard still has its respite ring that allowed it to be attached to a knock on the waistline . Like some of the bracelets , this brand ’s scabbard has ocelli .

The long sword has " all the feature of a running weapon system , " as it could be worn by a passenger and its scabbard was not high decorated . But the shorter sword with the swastikas does not appear to be functional , Georges say . Rather , this sword was likely used as a marking of power , including military command .

He tot up that the shorter sword is " more or less contemporary with the Celtic penetration in northern Italy and the sack of Rome in 387 BCE , " when the Gauls beat the Romanic army at the Battle of Alia , but " it is not potential to say more at this moment . "
