Kathryn Aurora Gray , aged 10 , discovered a magnitude 17 supernova on New Year ’s Eve , in the constellation of Camelopardalis . Gray had learned a 14 - twelvemonth - old was the untried to find a supernova and felt sure she could beat that .
Gray ’s find , which was soon confirmed and announced by the International Astronomical Union , fare as a result looking through 52 images on a computer screen , from amateur uranologist Dave Lane , who had emailed the prototype to her Fatherhood . Gray ’s father helped her check the discovery by helping her run through the list of current known supernova and prevail out asteroids .
As Deborah Thompson , executive director of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada , say :

It ’s fantastic that someone so new would be passionate about astronomy . What an incredible find . We ’re all very excited .
